Penn State v Nebraska Rivalry
While the two schools first met in 1920 (Penn State won 20-0), this rivalry really took off in the 1980′s.
Penn State started the decade off with a road victory at Nebraska in 1981 (winning 30-24) but no game matched the importance of the 1982 meeting in Beaver Stadium.
Nebraska came to town as the nation’s second ranked team and eighth ranked Penn State was looking to score a statement upset at home. Having entered the game with a 2-0 record after wins over Colgate and Texas A&M in College Station, Penn State was about to win a controversial game that would lead them to the program’s first national championship. And it was all thanks to a play that Nebraska fans still believe went the wrong way on the field.
With Nebraska leading 24-21 after Turner Gill took the Huskers 80 yards on 13 plays for a touchdown with 1:18 remaining, Todd Blackledge worked his magic, and luck to bring Penn State back in 10 plays. Though tight end Kirk Bowman caught his second touchdown of the game on the final play to give Penn State the victory, the play of the game came just before that when Blackledge threw a pass to fellow tight end Mike McCloskey that was ruled complete and in the field of play, despite replays on TV clearly showing that McCloskey was out of bounds with four seconds left at the two-yard line.
Penn State went on to play Georgia for the national championship in the Sugar Bowl and Nebraska finished the season with an unrewarded 12-1 record. Sixteen years after the game Nebraska fans are still made at the call. See it for yourself.
