Penn State‘s defense caused three fourth-quarter turnovers, the Lions‘ Silas Redd ran for 142 yards and quarterback Matt McGloin may have finally earned the starting job as the Nittany Lions defeated Iowa 13-3 Saturday in Beaver Stadium. Penn State’s win was its first against Iowa (3-2) since 2007, and only its second in 10 games.
The victory upped the Nittany Lions’ record to 5-1 on the season (2-0) in the Big Ten and certainly will silence an ever-growing chorus of naysayers. At least for a week.
In the fourth quarter PSU linebacker Nathan Stupar recovered a fumble, and Lion safeties Malcolm Willis and Nick Sukay both intercepted Iowa quarterback James Vanderberg on fourth-down plays. Read more...(330 words, estimated 1:19 mins reading time)
The Nittany Lion defense forced two turnovers and limited Indiana to 258 offensive yards, and Matt McGloin and Derek Moye connected for a 74-yard touchdown with 1:31 to play in the third quarter to lead Penn State past Big Ten Leaders Division foe Indiana, 16-10, on a sunny afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Penn State’s offense moved the ball well, tallying 464 yards, but a pair of turnovers in the red zone hindered the unit. Nonetheless, the Lions moved to 4-1 on Saturday with back-to-back home games up next on the schedule. Read more...(136 words, estimated 33 secs reading time)
If you saw the score and did not watch the game, you might think that Penn State squeaked past Indiana in their Big Ten matchup today. Nothing could be further from the truth. This was the most lopsided six point victory I have seen in a long time. Penn State outgained Indiana 466 yards to 254 yards. They held Indiana to under 200 yards passing.
So why was the game so close? Because Penn State couldn’t convert its offensive opportunities into points due to turnovers and inconsistent play for the quarterback position. Read more...(308 words, estimated 1:14 mins reading time)
Penn State finally got some production from its quarterbacks as Matt McGloin threw for three touchdowns and Penn State beat Eastern Michigan comfortably 34-6.
Penn State (3-1) held the Eagles (2-2) to 68 on the ground—221 below its season average—and forced three first-half turnovers. Nick Sukay’s interception late in the half set up the second of McGloin’s scoring strikes, a 5-yarder to receiver Derek Moye for a 17-0 lead.
It was not all good news for the Nittany Lions though as linebacker Michael Mauti, the team’s leading tackler, limped into the locker room in the first quarter with an ice pack strapped to his left knee. Later, Paterno said Mauti was likely out for the year after injuring his ACL. Read more...(434 words, estimated 1:44 mins reading time)
Michael Zordich scored on a 1-yard run with 2:42 left to stretch Penn State‘s winning streak against Temple to 29 straight games in a 14-10 victory on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field.
Temple took a three-point lead into the fourth quarter before a flurry of Owl turnovers turned the game’s momentum. Penn State’s offense went 44 yards in 12 plays, including two fourth-down conversions, for Michael Zordich’s one-yard touchdown run with 2:42 left gave the Nittany Lions a 14-10 win.

Penn State head coach Joe Paterno met with the media very briefly following his Nittany Lions‘ 24-3 loss to Alabama on Saturday night. Clearly frustrated by his team’s loss, Paterno’s session had some testy moments as you can see below:
Alabama completed a sweep of the home-and-home series between the these two storied programs with a methodical and smothering performance reminiscent of last year’s 24-3 win in Tuscaloosa. Bama beat Penn State 27-11 on Saturday in a game that was not that close.
Both teams came into the second week of the season with unsettled quarterback issues. At Alabama (2-0), those now appear to be settled as AJ McCarron was 19 for 31 with no turnovers.
On the Nittany Lion side of the ball, Penn State fans might be wondering if either Robert Bolden or Matt McGloin are the answer at quarterback. They combined to go 12 for 39 for 144 yards. McGloin completed 1 of 10 for no yards. Bolden led a late scoring drive and threw an interception. Read more...(401 words, estimated 1:36 mins reading time)
Penn State overwhelmed Indiana State 41-7 as Chaz Powell returned the game’s opening kickoff 95 yards for a score and Silas Redd led a rejuvenated Penn State ground game with two rushing touchdowns as Penn State rushed for 245 yards.
Redd ran for 94 of his 104 yards by the second quarter, including a 4-yard score for a 28-0 lead. Indiana State managed 170 yards of total offense and got pushed around by a much more physical Penn State team than we saw last year. anxious to rebound from last year’s 7-6 campaign. Good writeup by Adam Rittenberg at ESPN on Penn State‘s 37-24 loss to Florida. This is what Adam had to say about the game:
Missed opportunities and major mistakes hurt Penn State in a winnable Outback Bowl matchup against Florida. The Big Ten went 0-for-4 in the early bowls as the Lions fell to the Gators.
How the game was won:
Florida made enough plays on defense and special teams early and bought enough time for its offense to show some life in the second half. Penn State sophomore quarterback Matt McGloin had a very rough day, completing 16 of 38 passes with a touchdown and five interceptions, including a pick-six when Penn State was driving for the potential game-winning touchdown. The Lions controlled the clock and ran the ball decently, but they made too many major mistakes to beat a talented Florida team. Read more...(414 words, estimated 1:39 mins reading time)
