The Penn State defense which has been a strength of the Nittany Lions all season, was totally picked apart by Houston quarterback Case Keenum last night as Penn State lost 30-14 in the TicketCity Bowl.

This game was over in the first quarter as Keenum threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns in the FIRST QUARTER. Those passing numbers were the most any school has ever given up in a quarter, in all bowls. Ever.

It took Houston just 112 seconds to score its first TD. Later in the first quarter, they drove half the field in 69 seconds for another TD. And they added a 75-yard TD pass in the second quarter on a two-play drive that took just 24 seconds.

Penn State was manhandled of both sides of the lines against Wisconsin, losing 45-7 and ending the Lions dreams of playing in the inaugural Big Ten championship game next week.

Penn State’s defense, that had played so well against Ohio State last weekend, had no answer for Junior Badger running back Montee Ball who had 25 carries for 156 yards and touchdown runs of 1, 2, 9 and 18 yards.

When Wisconsin was not running it, quarterback Russell Wilson was shredding the Nittany Lions secondary, completing 19 of 29 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns.

Penn State head coach Joe Paterno meets with the media following Penn State’s 10-7 victory over Illinois

It took all 60 minutes on a snowy, sloppy Saturday in Happy Valley, but JoePa broke Eddie Robinson’s record with victory No. 409 as No. 21 Penn State defeated Illinois 10-7. Among all coaches, Paterno now only trails John Gagliardi, still active at Division III St. John’s, Minn., with 481 victories.

The Nittany Lions overcame six fumbles—losing two— with Silas Redd’s 3-yard touchdown run with 1:08 to go. Penn State’s only touchdown came after Illinois corner Justin Green was whistled for pass interference while breaking up a fourth-down pass for Derek Moye in the end zone.

Penn State Squeaks Past Purdue

by David on October 15, 2011

Penn State somehow managed to beat Purdue 23-18 as the Boilermakers missed a 44-yard field goal and extra-point attempt in the swirling winds of Beaver Stadium.

It wasn’t all bad news for Purdue on special teams. Raheem Mostert’s 71 yard kickoff return to the Penn State 26 helped set up Caleb TerBush’s 14-yard touchdown pass to O.J. Ross with 4:02 left in the third quarter to draw within 13-12.

But after missing the 44-yarder in the first quarter, Wiggs’ tough afternoon got worse. His extra-point attempt banged off the right upright, preventing a tie.

Penn State Finally Beats Iowa

by David on October 8, 2011

Penn State‘s defense caused three fourth-quarter turnovers, the Lions‘ Silas Redd ran for 142 yards and quarterback Matt McGloin may have finally earned the starting job as the Nittany Lions defeated Iowa 13-3 Saturday in Beaver Stadium. Penn State’s win was its first against Iowa (3-2) since 2007, and only its second in 10 games.

The victory upped the Nittany Lions’ record to 5-1 on the season (2-0) in the Big Ten and certainly will silence an ever-growing chorus of naysayers. At least for a week.

In the fourth quarter PSU linebacker Nathan Stupar recovered a fumble, and Lion safeties Malcolm Willis and Nick Sukay both intercepted Iowa quarterback James Vanderberg on fourth-down plays.

The Nittany Lion defense forced two turnovers and limited Indiana to 258 offensive yards, and Matt McGloin and Derek Moye connected for a 74-yard touchdown with 1:31 to play in the third quarter to lead Penn State past Big Ten Leaders Division foe Indiana, 16-10, on a sunny afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Penn State’s offense moved the ball well, tallying 464 yards, but a pair of turnovers in the red zone hindered the unit. Nonetheless, the Lions moved to 4-1 on Saturday with back-to-back home games up next on the schedule.

Penn State Beats Indiana 16-10

by David on October 1, 2011

If you saw the score and did not watch the game, you might think that Penn State squeaked past Indiana in their Big Ten matchup today. Nothing could be further from the truth. This was the most lopsided six point victory I have seen in a long time. Penn State outgained Indiana 466 yards to 254 yards. They held Indiana to under 200 yards passing.

So why was the game so close? Because Penn State couldn’t convert its offensive opportunities into points due to turnovers and inconsistent play for the quarterback position.
